Synthesis of Nanocrystalline Aluminosilicate Zeolites via a Ball Milling-Recrystallization Strategy

Abstract Zeolites are crystalline microporous materials featuring regular pore channels with tunable chemical compositions, which possess pivotal industrial application values in catalysis, adsorptive separation and ion exchange. In this work, a synthetic strategy combining ball milling and recrystallization was developed. Using FAU-topology zeolite as the parent material, a unique aluminosilicate precursor was fabricated via mechanochemical ball milling. With the as-prepared precursor, novel zeolite materials were synthesized through hydrothermal recrystallization in the presence of inorganic bases/organic structure-directing agents. Characterization results from X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and other techniques revealed that ball milling reduced the crystallite size of parent zeolites and disrupted their long-range order. During the crystallization, the constructed precursor significantly impacted the phase transformation and crystal growth of the zeolites, enabling the control of the framework topology and crystal morphology of the final products. Consequently, nano-sized aluminosilicate zeolites with MER, ANA, SOD, RUT, MFI and MEL topologies were successfully obtained. This study provided a novel synthetic strategy and technical route for the efficient fabrication of various nano-sized aluminosilicate zeolites, and layed an important experimental foundation for the research on phase regulation of zeolites.
