Research Progress of Organic Fluorescent Probes for the Detection of Epilepsy Biomarkers

Abstract Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder. Despite the increasing availability of various antiepileptic drugs in clinical practice, due to the significant heterogeneity of epilepsy, one-third of patients still cannot undergo precise localization of the epileptogenic zone, even after exhausting all existing diagnostic strategies. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new imaging methods to identify biomarkers that truly characterize the epileptic state, thereby increasing the proportion of patients eligible for surgical intervention. Fluorescence imaging, an economical, efficient, real-time, non-invasive, and high-resolution bioimaging technique, has emerged as a powerful tool for disease diagnosis and treatment. A variety of organic small-molecule fluorophores have been utilized to develop imaging probes for detecting epilepsy-related biomarkers. This review first summarizes the potential biomarkers of epilepsy and then focuses on the organic fluorescent probes designed for these biomarkers and their performance in epileptic imaging, and finally discusses the prospects for developing next-generation probes and the challenges they face in clinical translation.
