Advances in Interfacial Properties of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Matrix Composites

Abstract Carbon fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites (CFRP) are widely used in aerospace, defense, and new energy applications due to their lightweight, high strength, high temperature resistance. CFRP is composed of carbon fibers and polymer matrix, and the overall performance of the carbon fiber composites is determined by the interface between the carbon fibers and the polymer matrix directly. Currently, researchers had modified carbon fibers by various methods to improve their surface activity, roughness and wettability, in order to improve the interfacial bonding properties between carbon fibers and polymer matrix, and to meet the demands for high-performance CFRP in aerospace and other fields. This paper mainly summarized the latest progress of the surface modification methods of carbon fibers and their enhancement effects on the composites. It also discussed the interfacial theory of carbon fibers and polymer matrix, interface characterization methods. Finally, the future development trend of interface enhancement research was prospected.
