Simulation and Optimization of the Shoveling Plate Effect in Conditioning Cylinder Using Rocky DEM

Abstract  In order to study the dropping process of leaves in the conditioning cylinder on the shoveling plate and improve the processing resistance of leaves, modeling software was used to establish a three-dimensional model of the conditioning cylinder, thin sheet flexible leaves were created by Rocky 2021 R2 discrete element simulation software for numerical simulation, and the movement of leaves in the conditioning cylinder on the shoveling plate was visualized. According to the percentage curve of leaves holding capacity and the curve of leaves dropping rate, the leaves dropping process could be divided into two stages. The results showed that the force of sheet particles was different from the point-to-point contact force between rigid spheres, and the shape of leaves could not be ignored. When the rotation speed of the conditioning cylinder was 15 r/min, the leaves distributed less in the bottom of the conditioning cylinder, but more in the upper part of the conditioning cylinder. When the shoveling plate mounting angle was 80°, the amount of material on the shoveling plate increased, the shoveling plate dumping angle was reasonable, and the leaves embellish effect was optimal. The inclination angle of conditioning cylinder had a significant effect on the axial velocity of leaves falling on the shoveling plate. This study can provide a reference for the follow-up study on the residence time of leaves in the conditioning cylinder. The optimized parameters of tobacco leaves falling on the shoveling plate were obtained by simulation, which were helpful to control the loose and moist leaves process and guide the actual industrial production.
