Abstract The overflow type inlet gas-liquid distributor of the overflow type trickle-bed reactor was simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. Accordingly, the model was used to study and design the distributor. The results showed that for the reaction system with large ratio of gas to liquid flow rate, and low liquid spray density, the liquid velocity through the hole was significantly influenced by the gas flow rate in the tube, and larger gas velocity led to relative larger liquid velocity under the same liquid layer height. At the same time, the liquid tended to easily formed a central confluence because of the less liquid, and diffused difficultly in the vertical direction. The double-layer baffle could make the liquid distribute throughout the section more evenly.
