Abstract  Stirred tanks are widely used in process industries, such as chemical, petroleum processing, pharmacy and metallurgy. These processes usually involve complex fast reactions, and the time need to complete the reactions is shorter than the time required bringing homogeneity at molecular scale. Hence, the rates of reactions, the yields of desired products and the distributions of products depend on the conditions of mixing, fluid dynamics and transport, which are significant for the design, scale-up and optimization of stirred reactors. The experimental and simulation studies on the macro- and micro-mixing in stirred reactors are reviewed in this paper.
